Investment in training is a no brainer. There is no downside. By industry investing in the development of a skilled workforce, the result is the skilling and upskilling of more South Australians.
At a time of high unemployment and under-employment, there has never been a more important time to invest in skills.
Our vocational training system allows skills development to start at school where vocational training pathways provide options for students to build careers not reliant on University degrees. Vocational education and training encourages learning that supports industry outcomes. Learners who may otherwise not engage in formal learning are immersed in on and off the job training they can relate to and a framework of learning they can excel in. Students can work and learn without having to choose one or the other.
The development and support of the vocational training system in regional areas is vital in addressing skills shortages and youth unemployment in country South Australia. Skills shortages are having a significant effect on regional sustainability and renewal; and are best addressed in the long term by training and upskilling locals in the regions.
Employers who commit to skills development and invest in vocational training reap the rewards and their contribution to better skills needs to be recognised.
The SA Training Awards celebrate the achievements of individuals and organisations demonstrating a commitment to vocational training. The Awards showcase exceptional individual outcomes and organisations demonstrating best practice. Training providers who excel in delivering training outcomes for students and industry are recognised for their points of difference and responsiveness to industry needs.
In 2016, after winning at the SA Training Award, Leuwin Andrew went on to be awarded Australian School-based Apprentice of the Year. Leuwin is a shining example of how the vocational training system can help to focus and develop passions outside of the higher tertiary system.
There are 11 categories – six individual awards and five organisational awards. The organisation awards are open to employers and training providers who have shown exceptional achievement within SA’s vocational education and training sector.
The Training and Skills Commission hosts the annual SA Training Awards and nominations for the 2017 SA Training Awards are now open. The Awards provide an opportunity for organisations and individuals to be recognised for their exceptional achievements in vocational education and training.
