Business SA has announced that former Lord Mayor Martin Haese will succeed Nigel McBride as Chief Executive of the state’s largest and most influential business advocacy organisation.
Following the announcement in late 2018 that Mr McBride would not seek re-appointment, a nationwide executive search has resulted in what Business SA Chair Nikki Govan has described as “an exciting appointment that will ensure the continued strong leadership of Business SA, and that its tireless work on behalf of the state’s business and employer community will continue without any loss of momentum".
Ms Govan said Business SA’s board had recognised the outstanding reputation, track record and attributes that Mr Haese would bring to one of the state’s key leadership roles.
“Martin is well known as a tremendous advocate for Adelaide, for the city’s business and employer community and for wider South Australia. He brings an impressive track record of entrepreneurship, having previously owned his own national retail company with annual sales of $25 million, several hundred employees and a global supply chain. As General Manager of the Rundle Mall Management Authority, Martin provided advocacy and program support for 700 retailers and 300 business and commercial property owners. He deeply understands the challenges facing SMEs,” Ms Govan said.
“During his term as Lord Mayor, Martin delivered a number of key innovations that have driven economic growth in the city, including Ten Gigabit Adelaide. He is highly-respected by the business and employer community, has extensive networks and is well-regarded by all sides of politics."
Outgoing Chief Executive Nigel McBride said: "Knowing Martin well and having worked with him on some key issues around the City of Adelaide, I am delighted that someone of his calibre will lead the organisation going forward. As a leader who is very proud of Business SA and our many achievements, I know our staff, members, clients and stakeholders will be in very good hands.”.
Martin Haese said: “It is the innovators and risk-takers who are driving our great state forward. Having owned my own businesses, managed Rundle Mall and had the honour of leading City Council as Lord Mayor, I look forward to delivering even greater value for the members of Business SA. The growth and prosperity of the business community is critical in building a stronger economy for the benefit of all South Australians.”
Mr Haese has a number of commitments over the coming months and will work with the Chair and current Chief Executive to ensure a seamless transition.
Ms Govan praised Mr McBride’s leadership and his contribution as Chief Executive.
“Nigel has personified Business SA’s mission to fight for better outcomes for the state’s business and employer community courageously and without fear or favour,” she said. “Nigel has been an outstanding leader both in the broader business community and for this organisation.”
