Every day in business is a busy day.
And when you have a million and one things to do, setting aside time to be creative can easily be pushed further and further down the priority list. However, it’s one of the most important aspects when it comes to promotion of your business – particularly on social media.
When it comes to writing copy for social media, failing to make time for creativity does not equate to a strategy for success. It’s so important to make space to dream, think, write and edit, otherwise you may find yourself battling the dreaded writer’s block or producing lazy, uninspiring posts. Nobody (and no business) has time for that!
Here are 6 simple ways to boost your creativity and create awesome content day in, day out…
1. Block out distractions
Open plan offices can be amazing for energy and atmosphere, but sometimes all that noise can hamper creativity. Constant interruptions and mid-task conversations can easily break your concentration. Music can be the perfect solution. Pop some headphones in and queue up your favourite playlist. If you find lyrics a distraction, try jazz, classical or chillout music without vocals. Another option is to book a meeting room all to yourself.
2. Change of scenery
A lot of our day is spent at our desk. When you think about all the time spent in the same place – let alone time spent indoors – it’s no wonder it can be difficult to fire up the creative side of your brain. Change up where you work. Book a meeting room. Head to a local café. Sit in the park. Take yourself someplace else. Anywhere that will help you to focus and generate fresh new ideas. Change is as good as holiday, and while this is not quite escaping to the south of France, it’s (almost) the next best thing.
3. Empty your brain
When your brain has too many tabs open, and is cluttered with a million things to do, there’s not much room left for your creativity and ability to write. Empty out your thoughts and tasks onto paper by writing yourself a To Do list. The most effective way to do this is to highlight your most important tasks (MIT) at the top – these are the ones to tackle first, then add your medium sized tasks and quick tasks, which tend to pop up during the day.
Here’s a great To Do List template you can download and print.
4. Get moving
Sometimes a little fresh air and sunshine can do the world of good. Get out of the office and go for a walk on your own to clear your head. Also, research has shown that walking meetings can be a great way to improve thinking and creativity, as well as finding new solutions. The change of scenery and physical activity helps you feel energised and alert. Well worth trying, don’t you think?
5. Seek inspiration
Alyce Tran, founder of
The Daily Edited, recently revealed that she spends 2 hours a day on the internet, browsing websites and social media platforms to seek inspiration for the brand. Schedule in regular time to browse Pinterest, Instagram and relevant websites and take note of what stands out and catches your eye. Jot down what it is about that image, post or article that you like and use those findings to help you form and create your own content and imagery.
6. Schedule creative time in your calendar
Have you ever seen an interview with a fitness expert or celebrity and heard them say they schedule exercise in like an appointment, so they never miss it? The same philosophy can also be applied to creative time. Figure out when you perform best creatively during the day and block out regular times in your calendar to sit down and create. Ensure you mark this time as ‘busy’ or ‘out of the office’ so it can’t be overtaken by meetings.
